Catherine Gaudet completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Dance Department of UQAM. She created her first choreography in 2004 and gained attention over the next two years with Grosse fatigue — awarded at the Arhus International Choreography Competition (Denmark) — and L’arnaque. In 2009, she explored the impact of absence in her first full-length work, L’invasion du vide. In Je suis un autre (2012), she peeled back the veneer of social facades to expose the ambiguity of beings grappling with inner contradictions, an intention she continued in Au sein des plus raides vertus (2014), this time focusing on morality. In 2016, she co-directed La très excellente et lamentable tragédie de Roméo et Juliette with director Jérémie Niel, reinterpreting the Shakespearean legend in a sensual yet melancholic closed setting. In 2018, she created Tout ce qui va revient, combining three female solos from her repertoire, followed by L’affadissement du merveilleux, a piece for five dancers based on the circular form and the hypnotic insistence of cycles. In 2021, she produced the solo Se dissoudre, which explores time perception as an illusory phenomenon.
From 2010 to 2019, Catherine was a founding member of the company Lorganisme. She also helped establish the new O Vertigo Creation Center alongside Mélanie Demers, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage, and Ginette Laurin. Catherine is currently the artistic and general director of Compagnie Catherine Gaudet, a member of Circuit-Est Choreographic Center, an associate creator with DLD – Daniel Léveillé Danse, and an associate artist at Agora de la danse.
When not creating, Catherine Gaudet dedicates herself to sharing her approach and vision in choreographic writing and directing performers. She has served as a guest professor at UQAM’s Dance Department (2018-2019), where she continues to lecture, and she also teaches workshops in interpretation and creation for artists in professional or continuing training, through institutions such as the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (EDCM) and Circuit-Est Choreographic Center.
