Alan Lake is a performer, choreographer, filmmaker, and visual artist. He studied visual arts for five years before graduating in 2007 from the Dance-Interpretation program at L’École de danse de Québec. Since then, he has approached movement with a multidisciplinary practice, dedicating his daily life to dance. His work aims to bring together these disciplines in a common space in the service of movement.
He has presented his choreographic work in Quebec City, Montreal, and across Canada: Suite pour trois assiettes (2003), Le blé près de chez nous (2004), L’après-midi-oiseaux (2006), Dany and Me too (2009 co-created with Dany Desjardins), Chaudières, déplacements et paysages (2010), Huard-Éléphant (2011), Là-bas, le lointain (2012), Ravages (2015), and Les caveaux (2016).
Alan Lake incorporates dance films into his artistic practice, which he directs: Battement Bleu (2003) and 9 Minutes, 2 Fois (2004), which won the audience award at Vidéastes Recherché·es.
He has been invited by L’École de danse de Québec as a choreographer and educator to create works such as Huard-Éléphant (2011), la peau chargé d’étreinte (2012), Gratter la pénombre (2013), Résilience (2014), and Les yeux pleins d’effroi (2016). Alan Lake was also invited by the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal to create Le cri des méduses in the fall of 2016.
Since 2007, Alan Lake has joined Harold Rhéaume’s company Le fils d’Adrien danse as a performer in NU, Jumeaux—a co-creation with French choreographer Yvann Alexandre—and in the creation Fluide. He has been part of the cast for Carré des Lombes by Danièle Desnoyers in the pieces Là où je vis and Dévorer le Ciel. He participated in the first Grand Continental by Sylvain Émard Danse. He also performed for Dana Gingras – Animals of Distinction in an Arcade Fire music video.
In parallel, in 2007, he founded Alan Lake Factori[e], a multidisciplinary contemporary dance company based in Quebec City, through which he develops his artistic approach, situated at the crossroads of dance, cinema, and visual arts. From 2018 to 2023, he received support from the Centre de Création O Vertigo as an associate artist.
In 2024, he presented Le Mythe d’Orphée, a co-production with Théâtre du Trident. His new creation, S’abreuver des volcans, will premiere in winter 2025.
