About us

Mission

Part of the Groupe Danse Partout, La Rotonde is a presenter that specializes in contemporary dance. Created in 1996, its mission is to cultivate and develop audiences for contemporary dance through the experience of encounters with works, artists and their approaches.

Mandate

To realize its mission, La Rotonde’s mandate consists of:

  • The presentation and co-presentation of new contemporary dance performances from diverse backgrounds in various venues in the Quebec City area
  • Cultural action and mediation for the development of audiences in contemporary dance

Groupe Danse Partout

La Rotonde is part of the Groupe Danse Partout, whose mission is to promote the vitality and excellence of the art of dance in the province of Quebec and support the regional development of its ecosystem. An instigator of change in the world of arts and culture, Groupe Danse Partout is committed to actively contributing to strengthening the social, economic and cultural world of dance in Quebec City. Groupe Danse Partout also includes the Maison pour la danse de Québec and L’École de danse de Québec.

History

2021-2022

2021

  • La Rotonde celebrated its 25th anniversary throughout the year, with a retrospective photo exhibition and an extensive cultural mediation project with artist Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo.

2016-2020

2019

  • La Rotonde and Laboratoires Vivants de Nantes initiate ARCHIPELA, a platform for artistic exchanges in dance and theatre between the territories of the Pays de la Loire region (France), Tunis (Tunisia) and the province of Quebec.

2018

  • A reorganization of the Danse Partout Group, which results in 4 new Assistant General Director positions.
  • Marie-Hélène Julien, until then Artistic Direction Coordinator of La Rotonde becomes Assistant General Director in charge of La Rotonde.

2017

  • La Maison pour la danse opens in September and becomes part of the Danse Partout Group. La Rotonde’s administration office of is now located there.
  • The 2017-2018 season of La Rotonde hosts a record number of 17, including 3 multiple programs, for a total of 27 works.

2016

  • Canadian Heritage announces funding of $1.5 million for the creation of the Maison pour la danse.
  • La Rotonde launches its 20th anniversary season in 2016-2017 and renews its visual identity and company slogan.

2011-2015

2015

  • The Government of Quebec announces funding of $2.5 million for the creation of the Maison pour la danse.
  • Scheduled for 2017, the opening of this new cultural resource will provide a solid foundation for the development of dance in the region for many years to come.

2013

  • La Rotonde acquires the entire building at 336 Rue du Roi, with the intention of building the Maison pour la danse de Québec there in the near future.
  • Nadia Bellefeuille is appointed for the new position of Assistant General Director of Groupe Danse Partout.

2012

  • Steve Huot is appointed to the new position of General Director of Groupe Danse Partout, which brings together La Rotonde and L’École de danse de Québec. An extensive restructuring is initiated.
  • The Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the Ville de Québec jointly announce an agreement in principle for respective investments of $2.5 million and $750,000 in the Maison pour la danse de Québec project.

2011

  • New records for its 15th anniversary, the 2011-2012 season of La Rotonde presents 11 shows, with 7,554 spectators, an average of 687 spectators per show.

2006-2010

2009

  • Report on the Opportunity and Impact Study for the Purchase of 336 Rue du Roi, the first step in what will later become the Maison pour la danse de Québec project.

2008

  • The 2008-2009 season goes from presenting 7 to 9 shows, with co-productions with partners.

2007

  • Steve Huot, until then in charge of Business Development at La Rotonde, succeeds Johanne Dor as General and Artistic Director.

2006

  • La Rotonde and the Grand Théâtre de Québec team up for the first time to co-present Louise Lecavalier’s presentation Créations.

2001-2005

2005

  • La Rotonde moves again, this time to its new spaces acquired on Rue du Roi, in the heart of the Saint-Roch district.
  • The Réseau indépendant des diffuseurs d’événements artistiques unis (RIDEAU) gives the award for Partnership to the Regroupement De Scènes en Musées, of which La Rotonde is a founding member.

2003

  • Leaving its spaces at the Centre Alyne-Lebel on Boul. Langelier for the expansion of L’École de danse de Québec, La Rotonde moves its offices and studio to its new home on Rue Saint-Joseph.

2002

  • Again, as part of the Awards for Excellence in Arts and Culture, La Rotonde is honoured for its commitment, dynamism and the quality of its work.

1996-2000

2000

  • As part of the Awards for Excellence in Arts and Culture from the Ville de Québec, the Cultural Development Award is given to Johanne Dor, Director of La Rotonde.

1998

  • In addition to the 4 presentations in the regular series, 2 evening presentations dedicated to emerging artists from Quebec City are added.

1996

  • La Rotonde – Contemporary Choreographic Centre of Quebec City is founded by the Director of the Danse Partout Company, Luc Tremblay, within the Groupe Danse Partout Inc., which also includes the Danse Partout Company and L’École de danse de Québec.
  • Johanne Dor becomes the General and Artistic Director of the new presenter.
